Rookie Week

Summer dragging on?

Have a day-camper who is ready to move up to a sleep-away camp?

Looking for an end-of-summer activity before school starts back up again?

Independent Lake’s newest production is your answer and it’s happening THIS August: Rookie Week!

This trial week will give first-time campers and their families a wonderful proof of concept of the overnight experience, while getting to take full advantage of Independent Lake’s facility and program.

Dates for 2025:  August 18 – 23

What’s it all about??

ILC’s one-week trial session in August is specially designed for new campers ages 6-12. It is affectionately called “Rookie Week” and is a time for younger campers to experience a shorter version of ILC’s program. Kids who attend will get to ease into a sleep-away camp session without the bigger commitment of a regular session. This introduction will allow them to experience the supportive  environment & amazing program offerings of Independent Lake.

Campers can be in a beautiful camp setting while they learn new things, grow their independence, and make camp friends.

  • Rookie week WILL HAVE elective based scheduling where campers will have some choice in their activities. Counselors will help them with their choices considering all campers are new to camp and younger campers may need some guidance in creating their schedule.
  • Rookie week WILL HAVE activities that are catered towards younger campers with entry skill level. In saying that, our staff are trained to meet campers where they are in their goal setting and are ready to challenge any campers who are more advanced in an activity area.
  • Rookie week WILL HAVE a time for campers to show their family and friends what they have worked on & learned at camp. Keep in mind, the shortened time of practice and preparation compared to a full ILC session will mean that there will not be major productions like our usual full-length performances. There will be exhibition times for campers to display what they’d like to share.

Parents of rookie week campers are invited to spend the afternoon at camp on the last Saturday to have a BBQ lunch, meet new camp friends, visit the activity areas, meet the counselors, watch kids perform any skills they want to show off, and then take their campers home with them.

Emma absolutely loved her time at Independent Lake Camp last year. Every day brought new adventures, friendships, and memories she still talks about. It was truly the highlight of her summer!Ari
