Will I live on camp?

Yes! Your compensation includes room and board. You will live in camp cabins for your summer contract period and meals are provided to all campers and staff in the dining hall. Most of our staff are bunk counselors, which means that in addition to being an activity teacher, you are responsible for a group of 8-12 campers and live in a cabin with your group and co-counselors.

Do you have international counselors?

Yes, we have camp counselors who participate in the J1 Cultural Exchange Program. We all benefit from having a camp community comprised of many cultures.

If I am coming from another state or country, what airport should I use?

Newark (EWR) airport is the most convenient.

What do I pack? How do I prepare for this experience? Where do I do laundry?

Answers to these and other specific questions are all explained in a Staff Manual that each counselor receives prior to camp. Don’t worry!

Is there an orientation & staff training period?

Yes! It is for one full week at the beginning of your contract dates and every staff member is required to attend.

Can I have my cell phone or other devices at camp?

You cannot have your phone or other devices with you while you are working. We have a staff lounge area with lockers for you to keep these items and use them in this area (which has wifi) during your time off. There are camp computers that staff can use during their time off. Departments have computers, tablets & music players for use during camper activities. Simple music players (that are preloaded and cannot access data or wifi) with portable speakers are fun to have around for spontaneous bunk dance parties. Staff are not allowed to wear headphones while working. But don’t worry, there is music playing in pretty much every area of camp.

When is time off?

Bunk counselors are scheduled for one activity period off per day by their Department Head. Bunk counselors will rotate having rest hour off as well as evenings and communicate this with their Head Counselor. If counselors are not on a nightly duty, they have time off from the end of Evening Activity until curfew (1:00 AM for Counselors and 12:30AM for Counselor Assistants). As a reward, counselors can gain a breakfast or EVAC off. Counselors are given various days off throughout the summer. The number of days off depends on how many session weeks you work (not including orientation staff training week).
